Ngorongoro Crater Safari Guide: Fees, Best Time and Trips from Zanzibar

Zebras walking across the Ngorongoro Crater floor on a safari game drive in Tanzania

A Ngorongoro Crater safari is a game drive on the floor of a 610-metre-deep volcanic caldera that the conservation authority says holds more than 25,000 animals, including the Big Five. From Zanzibar, Lekobe fly-in trips start from US$1,186 per adult for 2 days, with park fees, flights and meals included.

If you are planning a Tanzania safari from the USA, the UK or Europe, the Ngorongoro Crater is probably already on your list. This guide covers what the crater is, the official 2026 fees, how many days you need, how to get there from Zanzibar or Arusha, and which itinerary fits your budget.

What is the Ngorongoro Crater?

The crater sits inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania, between Tarangire and the Serengeti. According to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), it is the world’s largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. It formed about 2.5 million years ago, when a volcano the authority compares in size to Kilimanjaro collapsed inwards.

Key numbers at a glance

  • Crater floor area: about 260 km²
  • Diameter: about 20 km
  • Depth from rim to floor: 610 metres
  • Wildlife: more than 25,000 animals, according to the NCAA
  • Habitats: grassland, swamps, rivers and woodland

The name comes from a Maasai phrase meaning “big bowl”. Grassland, swamp and woodland all sit inside one bowl, so you see a lot of species in a single game drive. The NCAA calls it probably the best place in Tanzania to see the Big Five: elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard. For more background, see our Ngorongoro Crater destination page.

What can you see on a Ngorongoro Crater game drive?

Wildlife is concentrated on the open crater floor, so animals are often easier to see here than in larger parks. Besides the Big Five, the NCAA lists hippos, hyenas, warthogs, zebras, elands, gazelles and wildebeest.

The black rhino

Many travellers come for the black rhino. Our itineraries are honest that it is the hardest animal to spot, so a sighting is never guaranteed. Our guides head down early in the morning to give you the best chance. On the 4-Day Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro from Zanzibar itinerary, the descent starts at 6:30 am.

Lunch on the crater floor

Most Lekobe crater days include a picnic lunch at a designated area on the crater floor. Picnicking is allowed at public picnic sites at no extra cost.

Ngorongoro Crater fees for 2026 (official NCAA tariffs)

All figures below come from the official NCAA tariffs page for non-East African citizens, which covers most visitors from the US, UK and Europe. Fees are in US dollars.

FeeRate (non-East African citizens)Who pays
Conservation area entry permit (age 16+)US$70.80Per person
Children under 5FreePer child
Crater service feeUS$295Per vehicle, per trip
Bush lunch (hot lunch) permitUS$23.60Per vehicle, per trip
Concession fee (lodges and permanent tented camps), age 16+US$59Per person

Why the crater fee changes your budget

The US$295 crater service fee is charged per vehicle, not per person. A couple pays it in full, while a group of four or six sharing a private vehicle splits it. Our guide to shared vs private safaris in Tanzania covers how group size affects the per-person price.

You don’t need to pay any of these fees yourself on a Lekobe trip. Every Ngorongoro itinerary below includes “park fees (for non-residents)” in the price. The only exception is a government increase in taxes or park fees after you book, which is listed as an exclusion. For a full breakdown of safari prices, see how much a safari from Zanzibar costs.

Ngorongoro Crater safari from Zanzibar: how it works

You can’t drive from Zanzibar to the crater, because the island is in the Indian Ocean and Ngorongoro is in the northern highlands. Every Lekobe Ngorongoro trip from Zanzibar is a fly-in safari. You fly to Arusha (or straight to the Serengeti), meet your guide, and continue by 4×4. Under NCAA guidelines, only four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed into the crater.

A typical first day

On the 3-Day Fly-in Private Safari to Tarangire & Ngorongoro, your driver picks you up from your Zanzibar hotel at 5:00 am. You land in Arusha at about 9:00 am and drive about two hours to Tarangire National Park for your first game drive. You go down into the crater on day 3, then fly back to Zanzibar on a 4:00 pm flight. Your driver meets you in Zanzibar and takes you back to your hotel.

Can you visit Ngorongoro as a day trip from Zanzibar?

Lekobe doesn’t offer a same-day Ngorongoro trip from Zanzibar. The shortest option is 2 days with one night near the parks. NCAA rules only allow driving between 06:00 and 18:00, and you have flights at both ends, so an overnight stay leaves you real time on the crater floor. If you only have one free day, see our guide to a one-day safari from Zanzibar. Mikumi and Nyerere are the realistic same-day choices.

How many days do you need for Ngorongoro?

One crater game drive is enough for most travellers. The real question is what you combine it with.

2 days: the crater plus one park

Choose this if you are on a Zanzibar beach holiday and only want to spend one night away. The 2-Day Safari to Tarangire NP & Ngorongoro from Zanzibar pairs a Tarangire game drive and a night in a lodge with a morning in the crater, and you are back in Zanzibar the same evening. The minimum age on this trip is 4.

3 days: a more relaxed pace

A 3-day trip gives you either more time in Tarangire, known for its baobabs and elephant herds, or a full day in the Serengeti before the crater. On the Serengeti fly-in versions, you fly straight from Zanzibar to the Serengeti at 8:00 am, drive to the Ngorongoro highlands on day 2 and go down into the crater on day 3.

4 days: the classic northern circuit

The 4-Day Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro from Zanzibar covers Tarangire, two days in the Serengeti and a final crater morning before your flight back to Zanzibar. It is the best value if you want all three parks without a long road trip.

Best time for a Ngorongoro Crater safari

The NCAA says the crater can be visited all year round, because its roads are in good condition and wildlife stays in the crater throughout the year. Our trip pages list June to October as the best months for wildlife viewing in the northern parks.

  • June to October: dry season, good visibility and the most popular time to visit
  • November to May: greener scenery, and the crater still has wildlife all year
  • Combining with the Serengeti: the best Serengeti area changes through the year. Our Great Migration month-by-month guide explains where the herds are and when.

For seasons across the whole country, read the best time to visit Tanzania.

Ngorongoro Crater rules worth knowing

The NCAA publishes visitor guidelines that every operator follows. The ones that affect your day most are:

  • A licensed guide or an official NCAA guide must accompany every crater visitor.
  • Walking safaris aren’t allowed inside the crater, only on the rim and in other parts of the conservation area.
  • The speed limit in the crater is 25 km/h, and off-road driving isn’t permitted.
  • No more than 5 vehicles may gather at a sighting, and vehicles should stay at least 25 metres from animals.
  • Plastic bags aren’t allowed anywhere in the conservation area.
  • Photographing local people is not allowed except at designated cultural bomas.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ngorongoro Crater worth visiting?

Yes, for most first-time visitors. The NCAA describes the crater as home to more than 25,000 animals and probably the best place in Tanzania to see the Big Five. The enclosed caldera keeps wildlife close together, so a single morning game drive can produce many sightings. Black rhino sightings are never guaranteed.

How much does it cost to enter the Ngorongoro Crater?

For non-East African citizens, the official NCAA tariff is US$70.80 per adult entry permit plus a US$295 crater service fee per vehicle, per trip. Children under 5 enter free. On a Lekobe safari these fees are already included in the trip price, so you don’t pay them separately.

Can I do a Ngorongoro Crater safari from Zanzibar?

Yes. You fly from Zanzibar to Arusha or the Serengeti and continue by 4×4 with a guide. The shortest Lekobe option is the 2-Day Safari to Tarangire and Ngorongoro from Zanzibar, from US$1,186 per adult, with flights, park fees, accommodation and meals included as listed.

How long do you spend in the Ngorongoro Crater?

Most visitors do one crater game drive, usually starting early in the morning. On our itineraries you go down after breakfast, have a picnic lunch on the crater floor and drive back up in the afternoon. NCAA rules only allow driving between 06:00 and 18:00, so every crater visit has to fit in daylight hours.

What is the best month to visit the Ngorongoro Crater?

You can visit the crater in any month, because wildlife stays in it all year, according to the NCAA. June to October is the dry season and the most popular time for wildlife viewing in the northern parks. The greener months have fewer visitors. Pick your dates around the Serengeti if you are combining the two.

Can children go on a Ngorongoro Crater safari?

Yes. Children under 5 enter the conservation area free under the NCAA tariff. Minimum ages on our trips range from 1 year on the 4-day Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro trip to 4 years on the 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro trip. See our family safari in Tanzania guide for more tips.
