What the price includes
Our safari prices are built to be all-in for the safari itself, so you are not surprised by park gate costs on the day. According to the cost section on each trip page, the price includes:
- Park fees for non-residents
- All activities, unless labelled optional
- All accommodation on multi-day trips, unless listed as an upgrade
- A professional driver-guide
- All transport during the tour, and flights during the tour on fly-in safaris (check the “Includes” tab of your trip)
- Round-trip transfer between your Zanzibar hotel and the airport
- Meals as listed in the day-by-day itinerary
- All taxes and VAT
What you should budget for separately
- International flights to and from Zanzibar
- Tips for your guide. Our guideline is US$10 per person per day.
- Travel insurance and visa fees. Zanzibar requires mandatory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors, and most nationalities need a Tanzania visa (see our Tanzania travel requirements guide).
- Drinks and personal items such as souvenirs
- Extra hotel nights before or after the tour
- Any government increase in taxes or park fees announced after booking
Why some safaris from Zanzibar cost more than others
Two safaris of the same length can differ by almost US$1,000. Four factors drive most of that difference.
1. Southern parks vs northern parks
Mikumi and Nyerere (formerly Selous) are closest to Zanzibar, which is why they are the only parks you can visit in a single day. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire are in the north, so they need a longer flight and at least one night on safari. That is the main reason a two-day Serengeti trip (from $1,628) costs more than twice a two-day Nyerere trip (from $664).
2. Flying vs driving
Fly-in safaris cost more, but they save your time. On our one-day Mikumi safari, you are picked up at your Zanzibar hotel at 5:00 am for a 7:00 am flight and are in the park by about 8:30 am. On the two-day Serengeti trip, a 5:00 am pickup connects to an 8:00 am flight, so you start game drives the same morning. If you only have a few days, flying is usually the difference between one game drive and a full safari day.
3. Shared vs private
On a shared safari you join other travellers in the vehicle, which lowers the price. For example, the one-day Nyerere fly-in costs from $460 shared and from $630 private. A private safari gives you your own vehicle and guide, so you choose where to stop and how long to stay with a sighting.
4. Camping, mid-range or luxury stays
On multi-day trips, accommodation is a large part of the price. Camping trips such as the 2-Day Private Camping to Selous keep costs down. Lodges and tented camps cost more. Upgrades are available on most trips; ask us for a quote.

How to keep your safari cost down
- Join a shared safari. Shared trips are the cheapest way to fly in from Zanzibar.
- Pick a southern park for short trips. Mikumi and Nyerere are closer, so they cost less for the same number of days.
- Travel as a group. On private safaris, the vehicle and guide are shared across your group, so ask for a quote for your exact group size.
- Book a combined trip. A beach-and-safari package can work out cheaper than booking the parts separately.
