How a one day safari from Zanzibar works
Zanzibar is an island, so there is no wildlife park you can reach by road in a day. The day trip works because safari flights connect Zanzibar with airstrips in or near the southern parks of mainland Tanzania. Your guide meets you on landing with a safari vehicle, you spend the middle of the day on game drives, and you fly back before evening.

- 5:00 am: pickup from your hotel in Zanzibar and transfer to the airport
- 7:00 am: safari flight departs
- 8:30 am: arrival in Mikumi, where your guide starts the first game drive

- 4:00 pm: return flight to Zanzibar, then a transfer back to your hotel
The Nyerere day trips follow the same pattern: 5:00 am pickup, game drives, a 1:00 pm picnic lunch, back at the airstrip at 4:00 pm and landing in Zanzibar around 6:00 pm. Expect a long but rewarding day, and plan a quiet beach day afterwards.
Mikumi or Nyerere (Selous): which park for a day trip?
Both parks sit in southern Tanzania and both can be done as a same-day fly-in from Zanzibar. They offer different experiences, so the right choice depends on what you want to see.
Mikumi National Park: open plains and easy viewing
According to Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), Mikumi covers roughly 3,230 square kilometres and its Mkata floodplain is prime ground for elephants, lions and buffalo, with zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and hippo also found. Nyerere National Park: rivers and a huge wilderness
TANAPA describes Nyerere National Park as more than 30,000 square kilometres of woodland, floodplain and channels of the Rufiji River, and one of the best places in Africa to look for African wild dogs. Shared or private?
On a shared day trip you join other travellers in the vehicle, which keeps the price down. A private trip gives your own vehicle and guide, so you can stay longer at a sighting or focus on photography. For Mikumi the difference is US$90 per adult; for Nyerere it is US$170.

Is a one day safari from Zanzibar worth it?
For many beach holidaymakers, yes. It is the fastest way to see elephants, lions and other big game on a trip that is mainly about the coast. It is also a good test if you are unsure whether a longer safari is for you.

- The one-day trips are listed as not suitable for solo travellers, so contact us if you are travelling alone.

Best time for a day safari from Zanzibar
TANAPA recommends the dry season, June to October, for Mikumi, when wildlife concentrates around rivers and pools and thinner vegetation makes animals easier to spot. What to bring on a one day safari
Pack light: you will be on a safari flight and in a vehicle all day. TANAPA suggests binoculars, sunscreen, a hat and neutral-coloured clothing.
